We’re five years into the pandemic and public messaging is still… let’s say “not ideal.” Sharing actual facts about how we can protect ourselves is important. So I made an Instagram post outlining the essentials for a COVID-19 preparedness kit. Not because I’m a public health wonk, but because I keep up with the research and my technical writing brain makes it easy to translate academic language gobbledygook into more accessible language.
All this also lives in a more comprehensive, informative, and more citation heavy Google Doc, but I've been finding the bright, slightly goofy Instagram post works better. There's less detail, sure, but it seems to be something people can read, understand, and share without feeling like they're handing someone a chore.
