Flowerwall

Project type

sculpture, decor, practical design, art installation

I designed and built a giant flower wall with my roommate to be a central part of our home decor. Because I wanted a riot of colour at scale, but money-per-square-foot is a factor, I chose materials that were available at the dollar store, because why spend a fortune when chaos and zip-ties can do the job?

Subsequently, we attached the blooms to a net, which made the whole thing light, flexible, and rollable, (perfect for moving it around without spilling errant flowers everywhere), and used long sticks along the top counteract sagging, because gravity is no one’s friend, and as a rigid place to attach anchor points.

The real fun was in the figuring-it-out-as-you-go part: balancing color, density, and weight while making sure it didn’t collapse under its own ambition. It became an exercise in practical reuse, turning cheap, everyday stuff into a wall that’s both beautiful and a little bit magic.

It's a simple thing at heart, but often simple is best. Since it's inception and creation in 2016, it's visited several cities, starred in a few weddings, and is still living its best life. It's currently up in my home in Toronto, where it's grown in size by 2 feet since it's last installation.
